Flyers sign Spencer Gill to three-year with an AAV of $975,000

One of the Philadelphia Flyers’ top defensive prospects has inked his first NHL contract. On Monday, general manager Danny Briere announced the team has signed defenseman Spencer Gill to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The deal carries a cap hit of $922,500, with an AAV of $975,000.

The Flyers took Gill in the second round, 59th overall, of the 2024 NHL Draft. Many scouts like the Riverview, New Brunswick native, because of his size, standing 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, but also his ability with the puck. A right-handed shot, Gill has keen vision and has the raw makings of a solid two-way blueliner, which made him a dark horse to go high in this past year’s draft.

In his own zone, he’s great at taking up space and eliminating his opponent’s time and space.

The 18-year-old made his preseason debut with the Flyers last Sunday against the Washington Capitals, logging 19:16 of ice time in a 6-2 win.

Gill burst onto the scene after an impressive 2023-24 season. With the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, he scored 12 goals and 34 assists for 46 points in 65 games, finishing tied for fifth on the team in points. Gill also registered three assists in the team’s five playoff games.

In two seasons in Rimouski, Gill has appeared in 106 games, scoring 12 goals and 38 assists for 50 points, along with nine points in 14 career postseason games.

Gill has also represented his country in parts of the past two seasons. He was on Canada White at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, as well as playing seven games for Team Canada at the 2024 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship, where and his team took home the gold medal.
