Warning: Includes SPOILERS for The Last of Us season 2, episode 7, and for The Last of Us Part II video game!
With Abby taking the reins as the central focus point of season 3, there's plenty to predict about how her story will pan out from her role in The Last of Us Part II. A significant portion of the game is shown from her perspective, and her three days in Seattle are arguably even more eventful than Ellie's, as she's roped into the middle of an ongoing war and experiences more horrifying obstacles. The Rat King is an absolutely disgusting amalgam of various Infected, and the fight sequence against it is nightmare fuel, but it's somehow not the scariest scene.
The Last Of Us' Creators Hint That Abby's Crane Scene Will Happen In Season 3
The Crane Bridge Is One Of The Last Of Us' Scariest Sequences
Screen Rant was in attendance for a press conference with co-showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann when the pair were asked what audiences could tease for The Last of Us season 3. While Craig Mazin made a joke involving "Rats," referring to the monstrous Rat King villain, Neil Druckmann added, "You know, there’s a certain crane that you’re seeing in episode seven that is very telling." Druckmann is referring to the sky bridges, a narrow crossway using an old tower crane that allowed passage between Seattle skyscrapers in The Last of Us Part II.
In the game, Abby crosses the sky bridge as a way to traverse the war-torn city, allowing her to avoid the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites as she pursues her own goals. This is one of the most horrifying moments in the game, and the TV show's version will likely be incredibly anxiety-inducing for anyone who's not big on heights (myself included). In a game franchise that's packed with various forms of the Infected as well as some unbelievably vile human beings, there's still nothing quite like climbing on a narrow, unstable bridge nearly 1,000 feet off the ground.
Abby's Game Story Suggests The Last Of Us Season 3 Will Still Be Very Intense
The Last Of Us Might Be More Intense Than Ever
For anyone who was underwhelmed by season 2, The Last of Us season 3 looks to be incredibly intense. Not only will audiences have to watch Abby and her friends endure some of the most terrifying obstacles in the franchise, but it will also be an emotionally poignant journey. Like Ellie, Abby is a character who's experienced great hardships in the show's post-apocalyptic world, some of which we've seen in some capacity. As more layers to her character are unraveled, these elements will only become more powerful.
Even more so than Ellie's, Abby's story in The Last of Us Part II has the intensity of being dropped directly into the center of an ongoing conflict. We saw how Isaac views Abby in the season 2 finale, attributing notable value to her and her killing capabilities. Ellie is essentially on the outskirts, while Abby is in the thick of it, with audiences having to catch up on the situation very quickly.
The Last of Us is known for mixing horror intensity with high emotional stakes, and Abby's arc is arguably some of the best writing they've done. The pivot to telling her story is sudden and unexpected, adding to the raw, powerful narrative. The Last of Us season 3 may seem daunting after season 2's mixed reviews and a shift in protagonist, but it could ultimately be the best yet.
