Former 49ers Star Vernon Davis Swaps the NFL for the Big Screen

Davis was at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland for the Indie Night Film Festival and the premiere of his short film, “The Masquerade.” It was written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Jocelyne Rose Lions. The film — described as “Drama/Fantasy/Sci-Fi” — has deep Bay Area ties and examines themes of gentrification, art and activism.

“You have two brothers who have two different perspectives, and I think people, just in life, they can learn from it,” said Davis. “It has to do with what we deal with on an everyday basis so they can take a lot of different pieces from this story. And I think that’s very important when you’re telling a story.”

“As a filmmaker, I just find so much joy and collaborating with people that are committed to the craft and Vernon has that commitment level,” said Lions. “So, first and foremost, that was a driving factor in writing something this meaningful, and really just my Bay Area crew and cast. Vernon’s got deep roots here in the Bay and being able to bring everyone together to make a message about time and community was really important to us.”

Davis was drafted by the Niners in the 2006 NFL draft where he played as a tight end until 2015.
