This former Boston Bruins draft pick has been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The San Jose Sharks have traded former Boston Bruins draft pick Matt Benning, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Timothy Liljegren.
Benning, 30, was selected by the Bruins with the 175th overall pick of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. However, after being drafted by the Original Six club, the 6-foot-1 defenseman never played a game for the Bruins. The Bruins did not sign him to an entry-level deal after he finished his collegiate career with Northeastern University, and he joined the Edmonton Oilers in 2016.
Since then, Benning has put together a pretty solid career as a shutdown defenseman. In 464 games split between the Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Sharks, he has 17 goals, 85 assists, 102 points, and 714 hits.
Benning will now provide the Maple Leafs with another veteran option for their blueline.
