Following a nationwide search, longtime law enforcement officer Randall L. Darlin has been appointed Chief of Police in Evans.
Former Deputy Chief of the Chicago Police Department Randall L. Darlin has been named as the City of Evans’ new Chief of Police following a months-long search after the retirement of former chief Rick Brandt on March 1. Darlin has 31 years of law enforcement experience, including 27 years in Chicago and the last four years working for the Northglenn Police Department. His most recent position was Deputy Police Chief of the Northglenn PD.
“I am deeply excited for Chief Darlin to begin his tenure with the Evans Police Department,” said Evans City Manager Cody R. Sims. “During the recruitment period, we received interest from 34 candidates from across the United States, many of whom had very impressive qualifications and experience. I believe Chief Darlin’s leadership will be transformational for the Evans Police Department and will push us all to be better public servants.”
Darlin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Juris Doctor degree with Cum Laude honors from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law. He is a licensed attorney in Illinois and a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police.
Darlin, who assumed the role of Chief on Monday, said a primary objective from day one will be to ensure the police force has adequate staffing. He noted that police departments across the country are experiencing staffing shortages over the last five years. Darlin also said accountability is a vital pursuit and that the police force should be accountable to themselves, the community, and the profession.
“I’m super excited for this opportunity,” Darlin said on Friday. “In the process I was able to learn that the City of Evans has an incredibly dedicated leadership team. We are going to work with the leadership team to make the Police Department a model agency for policing in Colorado.”
The Citizens Police Data Project (CPDP) shows that Darlin has 41 allegations, 13 use of force reports, and two instances of being reprimanded in his 27 year career with the Chicago Police Department. The database includes $570,000 in lawsuit settlements involving Darlin. He received multiple crime reduction awards, attendance awards, and a life saving award during his time in Chicago. Darlin also received 52 honorable mentions.
