Bill Belichick has made some of the most intelligent coaching decisions in the NFL's history. Hiring a former Grey Cup champion as his defensive assistant should be his first move to translate to the college ranks.
A few weeks ago, the news broke that Belichick's staff had hired former Edmonton Elks head coach Chris Jones as a defensive assistant. This move came months after his firing in Edmonton, followed by a short stint with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Of course, the Ti-Cats would have loved to keep the former Grey Cup champ on their coaching staff, and current head coach Scott Melanovich just mentioned his perspective on why Jones did not return to Hamilton.
“The specifics of what did or didn’t happen with Chris, I’m not going to get into those,” Milanovich said. He added, “What (Jones) was able to do in the last seven weeks of the season with our defense, I thought was outstanding. I’m happy for Chris. He’s closer to home — great opportunity working with Coach Belichick. I still believe he’s one of the greats in our league.”
Jones significantly impacted the Ti-Cat's defense, leading the squad as a defensive assistant. He helped the team to a five-turnover game on Sept. 14, 2024, in a winning effort over the Ottawa Redblacks.
Milanovich had to find a replacement for the veteran defensive assistant and is now bringing Brett Monson. “We’re thrilled to have Brent Monson. Brent Monson came highly recommended by Chris Jones,” Milanovich claimed.
Milanovich continues to build his coaching staff after returning to the CFL coaching ranks last season with the Tiger-Cats when he missed the playoffs. He last saw some time as the quarterbacks coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2021-22.
If true, it may be a great season in Hamilton. The defensive side of the ball will be led by Stavros Katsantonis and coached by Brett Monson. Hamilton will open their season on June 7 against the Calgary Stampeders.
