A massive can of worms has been opened up, with everyone giving their opinions on the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.
The talk was intensified with ESPN surveying NFL scouts, executives, and coaches about the top 10 quarterbacks in the league, and Hurts ranking ninth. That sparked a huge conversation on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football," where former NFL linemen Willie Colon first discussed how Hurts compares to the "top quarterbacks" in the league and added another element to the conversation.
"For some reason, we forget one stat and that's winning. He's a winner bottom line. You put him up against that top five that people like to throw out like Burrow, Lamar, and Allen, he's 8-2 against those big boys, so the guys shows up in the big games. Kyle mentioned Super Bowl, you have to understand what the gameplan going into that Super Bowl was. Stop Saquon Barkley, you can finish the Eagles. That wasn't the case. They put that whole game on Jalen Hurts' shoulders and arms and he delivered. By the way, not only did he lose to Patrick Mahomes and outplayed him the first time, he beat him the second time and outplayed him again and so I'm sitting here kind of scratching my head like why do we keep moving the goal post when it comes to Jalen Hurts?"
"Bottom line is he's the best quarterback in Eagles history, and I'm a fan of Michael Vick and everybody else, but right now he's the best quarterback in Eagles history, and he's a top-five quarterback in the NFL."
Is Hurts indeed the best quarterback in Eagles history?
Everyone can argue about how Hurts compares to the rest of the current NFL all day long. In fact, it has been discussed for days, but what about the franchise's history?
There are plenty of Eagles quarterbacks who need to be in the conversation. Guys like Tommy Thompson, Norm Van Brocklin, Ron Jaworski, Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, and Nick Foles. These are the most commonly mentioned ones.
Among those quarterbacks, Thompson is the only one that has won multiple league titles. Hurts is the only one to have been to multiple Super Bowls. Where do we draw the line on where the argument ends?
Looking at modern times, Hurts has accomplished more than any other Eagles quarterback in the Super Bowl era. Two trips to the Super Bowl, one Super Bowl title, one Super Bowl MVP, two Pro Bowls, and one All-Pro selection. That's pretty impressive.
Hurts still has a lot more to add to his resume, but at age 26, he still has plenty of years ahead of him. He's done all the right things and has the talent around him to continue his success.
The disrespect he faces among current NFL quarterbacks will likely continue throughout the season, but the argument for the franchise's best appears to be in Hurts' favor right now. And it might not be even close.
