Here's what Michael Del Zotto had to say on the Rangers contract negotiations with Igor Shesterkin.
With Igor Shesterkin’s contract ending next summer, rumors of a potential extension have started to circulate.
Shesterkin confirmed that his agent and the New York Rangers have begun talks to figure out a new contract.
When asked about the Shesterkin’s contract situation, former Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto had a very simple answer.
“I don’t know how you let a guy like that walk away,” Del Zotto said via Forever Blueshirts.
The whole league knows how valuable Shesterkin really is and what he provides to the Rangers on a nightly basis.
When teams have a player of Shesterkin’s magnitude, it’s best to just pay them what they are requesting and face the consequences later on.
The Rangers are one of the top Stanley Cup contenders, largely due to their superstar goaltender, so it would be foolish of them to mess around with these contract negotiations.
Chris Drury also has to focus on signing Alexis Lafrenière and K'Andre Miller to contract extensions, but Shesterkin likely has to be his first priority considering his worth to the team and the amount of money he is expected to get, which could be upwards of $10 million.
Now, the ball is in Rangers’ court as the organization navigates what they want for the future of the franchise.
