Former Saints first-round pick decides to help AFC foe right before their preseason action kicks off

The New Orleans Saints have been fairly active during free agency this offseason, compared to expectations. The latest free agency moves involving the Saints is not an addition, though. Rather, one of their former players (and early draft picks) is signing with a brand new organization.

Andrus Peat signs with Steelers

Former Saints first-round pick Andrus Peat is headed to the AFC. Late here in free agency, the veteran offensive lineman will join the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to reports.

Peat was the 13th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He spent his first nine NFL seasons in black and gold with New Orleans. He spent time last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Now, he is headed to a new AFC organization, hoping to earn a roster spot and backup role - most likely.

I discussed Peat's potential role with Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Rob Gregson. The depth aspect of Peat, as well as his pro experience, will be what provides value for the Steelers offense.

It’s quite simple with the Steelers and Peat. Backup LT Calvin Anderson has been banged up and Isaac Seumalo just returned from the non-football injury list. The Steelers no longer have a true swing tackle. Dylan Cook and Anderson could be that player, but they are unproven. So why not sign a 10 year vet who’s only 31 and has 3 Pro Bowls under his belt?

Pittsburgh hopes Peat doesn’t have to play a single snap all season. But if he does, they can be confident in his services. Peat is the best you’re going to get this time of year. -- Rob Gregson

Peat will try to carve out a depth role. We'll see if he can earn a roster spot by the time Week 1 rolls around. The Saints recently signed Shane Lemieux as interior offensive line depth.
