Compensatory selections have been a huge aspect of the Minnesota Vikings' free agency plan under general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. They are set to get at least two of them with the potential of getting a third if wide receiver Trent Sherfield gets enough playing time and earns a bonus because of it.
Right now, they are projected to receive a third-round pick for losing quarterback Sam Darnold and either a fourth or fifth-round pick by losing Daniel Jones. They found a way to maximize their future and current outputs while getting assets in return.
Shaquill Griffin's visit to Seattle could net Vikings a compensatory pick
The Vikings still have more opportunities to earn compensatory picks, as not all of their free agents have signed with teams yet. One of those is cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who is set to visit the Seattle Seahawks.
It's an interesting pairing, Griffin and the modern-day Seahawks, as the franchise selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played well for the Vikings last season as their third cornerback, playing around 50% of the snaps. He was on a one-year, $4 million contract to fortify a unit that desperately needed it after losing Khyree Jackson and Mekhi Blackmon.
The Seahawks could use a little bit of depth at cornerback after Devon Witherspon and Riq Woolen. Their third cornerback is Josh Jobe, with last year's draft pick Nehemiah Pritchett taken in the fifth round of last year's NFL Draft.
Why would the Seahawks look into signing a guy right now? They don't have to worry about losing a compensatory selection. The Seahawks have signed three more compensatory qualifying free agents than they have lost, so they are highly unlikely to earn a compensatory pick.
The Vikings could end up earning the same compensatory pick they lost when they signed Griffin last April.
