Most NFL franchises have their starting quarterback settled and ready to go for the 2025 season, but the New Orleans Saints are not one of them.
The days of New Orleans Saints fans heading into season after season with the stability of Drew Brees under centre are long over.
New head coach Kellen Moore was a quarterback himself and is now searching for his signal-caller.
Derek Carr’s retirement means four quarterbacks are now seeking an opportunity with New Orleans.
Second-round draft pick Tyler Shough will be in contention, though he enters the league as a 25-year-old rookie.
Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler, selected in 2023 and 2024 respectively, are also looking to push themselves to the top of the depth chart.
Saints star praises Hunter Dekkers
New Orleans did not settle for just selecting Shough, as Hunter Dekkers was also signed as an undrafted free agent.
The 24-year-old played for Iowa State and Iowa Western before entering the 2025 NFL Draft.
Dekkers recorded 54 passing touchdowns and 25 interceptions in college, throwing for more than 7,000 yards in the process.
Now battling for a spot on the Saints roster, Dekkers has received praise from an NFL veteran in Foster Moreau.
Saints tight end Moreau has told Sirius XM Radio that he has been impressed with how Dekkers can ‘really spin it’.
Moreau noted that he has experienced quarterback competitions in the past, and believes the winner of this Saints battle is truly unclear – especially with Dekkers in the mix.
“I’ve been part of quarterback competitions before, back in college — not me personally — but I’ve gotten to see them for a long time,” Moreau said. “Most of the time you kind of feel like guys really have an edge on each other. ‘The starter is coming back from last year, but we didn’t really like his production.’ Or different stuff like that in terms of familiarity with the player. Genuinely, we really do have a full-blown 33, 33, 33 percent competition between those three guys. We’ve even got another guy, Hunter Dekkers, a lefty, and he can really spin it, too, to be honest with you
“It’s anyone’s job for the taking. I’m excited to see how it goes,” he added.
Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough are the favourites
Dekkers is in a battle to even make the Saints roster, just like other undrafted free agents across the country.
New Orleans already having three quarterbacks on the roster makes Dekkers’ task even trickier.
Head coach Moore was an undrafted free-agent quarterback himself and will certainly understand the position Dekkers finds himself in.
Right now, though, the favourite to start the season is surely between Rattler and Shough.
Rattler started six NFL games last season, recording four passing touchdowns and five interceptions.
Fumbles were a problem for Rattler, but that introduction to NFL life may stand him in good stead for the new season.
Shough enters the league as a second-round pick, meaning the Saints surely have plenty of faith in him.
Shough only started more than seven games in a college season on one occasion, though, and he is actually fairly inexperienced for a quarterback who turns 26 in September.
Moore has some big decisions to make ahead of his first season as an NFL head coach, and will hope to see his starting quarterback emerge from the pack in the coming weeks.
