Garrett Wilson Becomes the Jets Highest-Paid Receiver in History with a $32.5 Million Per Year Deal

It’s rare for an NFL team to extend a first-round draftee after three seasons of league football. Usually, teams wait until they complete their fourth year to make the decision, but the New York Jets had seen enough from Garrett Wilson to give him a four-year extension.

Wilson turned out to be among the few bright lights for the Gang Green during a time of great turmoil. Despite finishing near the bottom of the barrel in their division and going through seven different quarterbacks, Wilson crossed 1000 yards and recorded at least three receiving touchdowns on each occasion.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Wilson is also part of an elite group of receivers in NFL history to record 1,000+ receiving yards and 80+ receptions in each of his first three seasons. That list includes Super Bowl winner Odell Beckham Jr. and All-Pro stars Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, and Michael Thomas.

In April, the Jets activated Wilson’s fifth-year option to keep him in the Big Apple through the 2026 season. The Jets’ general manager, Darren Mougey, sweetened the deal even more on Monday, July 14.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mougey agreed to a four-year $130 million contract extension with Garrett Wilson.

Jets and wide receiver Garrett Wilson reached an agreement on a four-year, $130 million contract extension that includes $90 million guaranteed. It marks the first time in NFL history that a receiver has received an average of over $31 million after playing only three seasons. Wilson will now be under contract for the next six seasons, through 2030. Agents Jeff Nalley and Graylan Crain of CAA negotiated the deal with Jets executives Nick Sabella and Darren Mougey.

Adam Schefter tweeted, much to the delight of the Jets fans

Wilson’s contract should bring immense joy to his draft peers. Cornerback Sauce Gardner, RB Breece Hall, LB Jermaine Johnson II , TE Jeremy Ruckert , OT Max Mitchell , and DT Michael Clemons.

Breaking down Garrett Wilson’s contract

Wilson signed a four-year $130 million contract, of which $90 million is fully guaranteed. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport explained that Wilson’s $90 million guaranteed money is the fourth-largest figure signed by a receiver.

The other details include a $13.75 million signing bonus. Wilson also stands the chance to earn a $20 million (in his second year) and $10 million (third year) bonus if he manages to meet certain conditions.

With the influx of cash, Wilson became one of the highest-paid wide receivers to play the game of football. His $32.5M average annual value places him right behind the likes of Chase ($40.25 million), Jefferson ($35 million), CeeDee Lamb ($34 million), and DK Metcalf ($33 million).

The Jets’ new quarterback may have a hand in convincing Wilson to stick around. If rumors were to be believed, he harbored mixed feelings about the Davante Adams signing last season. Adams became Aaron Rodgers’ top target while Wilson took a backseat. Remarkably, he still crossed 1000 yards and had 7 touchdowns (his best ever score).

Rodgers was cut, and Adams left for LA. New head coach Aaron Glenn signed free agent Justin Fields, reuniting Wilson with his former Ohio State quarterback. Wilson and Fields were the dynamic duo at the Buckeyes, and the Pro Bowler is looking forward to sharing the field with him once more.

I didn’t think we’d get this opportunity again on this level. I am still taking it, but we have picked up where we left off [at Ohio State].

Garrett Wilson said

The Jets are smacked down the middle of the pile in terms of schedule strength in 2025. Ironically, in week one, they will face off against Rodgers and his new team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
