General Hospital (GH) spoilers suggest that the land of soap operas has changed dramatically over the years.
While there was once a time when daytime dramas dominated the airwaves, there are only three shows currently on cable from the original set of soaps from back in the day, with GH being one of them, and Days of Our Lives is currently exclusively on the streaming platform, Peacock.
Beyond the Gates is a CBS soap that debuted in February 2025 – the first one since 1999, which seems to bring hope to the genre. Still, GH star, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos), recently blasted ABC on its track record when it came to cancelling soaps.
Maurice Benard Welcomed Cameron Mathison To ‘State of Mind’
Fellow GHer, Cameron Mathison (Drew Cain), was on Benard’s YouTube podcast, State of Mind, recently.
While GH viewers love to hate Mathison’s character, Drew, the actor rose to the top of daytime drama via his All My Children (AMC), Ryan Lavery, role. Of course, Benard once played Nico Kelly on AMC, too.
The actors had a nice chat, and then their conversation turned to AMC’s cancellation. Benard noted that the ABC network (the same network GH is on right now) made a “huge mistake” cancelling both AMC and One Life to Live (OLTL). AMC’s last ABC broadcast was in the fall of 2011, while OLTL’s was in early 2012.
Does Maurice Benard Have A Point?
Benard went on to say that the shows ABC replaced the soaps with didn’t last very long. He also acknowledged that at the time, the network didn’t realize the power of a soap audience. Benard also stated that he believes ABC has learned from this mistake.
Mathison also talked about losing his home to the LA wildfire earlier in 2025, opening up about his heartbreaking loss on the podcast.
The actor stated that when his home burned down, he lost about $2 million; however, the hardest thing about it all was losing sentimental items that can never be replaced.
What do you think about Benard’s statement?
