The New York Giants may catch a break to begin the 2024 NFL season. The Giants are set to take on the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. To New York’s benefit, Minnesota doesn’t believe that their No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 Draft J.J. McCarthy is ready to man responsibilities under center out of the gates.
NFL analyst reveals Vikings plans at QB to start the 2024 season
NFL analyst Greg Cosell revealed the Vikings’ organization’s sentiments on McCarthy while a guest on the Ross Tucker Podcast:
The Vikings did a lot to get the chance to select McCarthy. They traded up their No. 11, No. 129, and No. 157 picks with the Jets to gain New York’s No. 10 and No. 203 overall picks, taking the Michigan star with the former. McCarthy was on a lot of teams’ radars and Minnesota jumped on the opportunity to earn his rights without risking him getting taken off the board, even though the Jets have Aaron Rodgers locked in at QB.
Giants: J.J. McCarthy or Sam Darnold will present unique challenges in their season opener
The standout passer was looked at as an NFL-ready talent prior to entering the league. His 72.3 percent completion percentage in his junior year for the Wolverines was a major reason why he was looked at so highly in one of the most competitive QB classes in recent memory.
Despite this, the Vikings may roll with Sam Darnold to kick off the 2024 campaign. Darnold completed 28 of 46 passes for 297 passing yards and two passing touchdowns in 2023 for the San Francisco 49ers. He has a big arm that can burn the Giants’ secondary, but issues with accuracy which neutralized that strength of his. The Giants will need to prepare for whichever quarterback gets announced as the starter for the season opener.
