The Vegas Golden Knights have signed Akira Schmid to a two-year deal with an $875,000 AAV.
When traded to the Golden Knights, Schmid was a pending RFA but the Golden Knights elected to not extend a qualifying offer to him allowing him to become a UFA. Despite the Golden Knights doing this, reports stated that he would be signing with the team.
On July 3, the 24-year-old signed a standard one-way contract.
The Golden Knights now have three goaltenders signed to their NHL roster with Adin Hill and Ilya Samosonov. Their usual tandem of Hill and Logan Thompson of course will not go further but how head coach Bruce Cassidy elects to deploy them will be a major talking point.
Hill hasn't carried the workload of a true number one goaltender and both Samsonov and Schmid are coming off of the worst seasons of their careers. Both were below a .900 save percentage and spent time in the AHL.
If either Samsonov or Schmid are able to find their game and allow Hill to get rest, the Golden Knights management staff headlined by general manager Kelly McCrimmon will look like genius but a lot can still go wrong.
Whatever happens cannot be determined now but what can be is the Golden Knights know what their goaltender situation is heading into the 2024-25 season.
Missing key positions in the forward group and with an abundance of NHL-calibre defensemen, the Golden Knights offseason is far from over.
