Burzek's wedding finally occurred in the last approximately sixty seconds of the Chicago P.D.
Season 12 finale despite a twelve-year buildup. The show did not give the couple their vows, so there was no typical flair associated with weddings. Viewers should not expect to see anything more about that. "There’s a version of this, yeah, sure, where we could jump back into the wedding, but I doubt it," showrunner Gwen Sigan told TV Insider when asked if the show will revisit the wedding in Season 13. "[Their vows were] definitely not shot. We definitely didn’t shoot anything," she revealed. "They’re not just hanging out for us to put out there, but who knows? You never know, I suppose, where we could take the next season." However, there was a rationale behind how events unfolded. The team had secured a major win, but it came with a cost, which Chapman (Sara Bues) was putting together in the pews before the wedding. "We thought a lot about writing the vows for sure," Sigan said. Why didn't they? She explained:
"I think as we were going through the process of sort of putting all these storylines together, you have this very high-stake situation for Voight (Jason Beghe), for the full team. In so many ways, this is really a Voight episode, and so to also want to marry it with this wedding was tricky, and we wanted the right tone. We wanted to juxtapose the best we could this really emotional ending in Chapman and Voight and this cost, and then also have this happiness and the promise of more to come and the reason why Voight took the actions he took, to see all of that happiness and at the same time, you’re seeing this heartbreak."
While it would have been great to hear their vows, it wasn't the right fit. "The vows themselves are so sweet that it just felt like it wasn’t the right juxtaposition. It felt like it was a little too jarring. So that’s kind of why we ended up going in this direction that we chose to really lean more into this conversation between Chapman and Voight," the showrunner explained. But all in all, the wedding did happen, and Burzek will enter the next stage of their lives as a married couple.
Burzek's Marriage Could be Good for 'Chicago P.D.' Season 13
The world is their oyster as the Chicago P.D. team gears up for Season 13. "We’re not in the [writers] room yet, so I think everything’s an option at this moment, but I think it’ll be really fun to write a married couple," the showrunner said, teasing what's on the horizon for Kim (Marina Squerciati) and Adam (Patrick John Flueger) and what it means for the show. "We haven’t had a married couple on the show, really, since Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) were married, but their marriage was very fraught. So this will feel a little bit different," she added.
Tune in to NBC this fall to see how Kim and Adam handle their marriage when Chicago P.D. returns for Season 13. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
