Hidden Priority? Why Sean Payton Could Still Target the Interior O-Line in Denver

Broncos don't have a pressing interior O-line need, but Sean Payton always values this spot

On paper, the Denver Broncos don’t appear to have an urgent need on the interior offensive line. The unit has stability, returning key contributors and showing promise late in the 2024 season. But with Sean Payton running the show, fans should know by now — appearances can be deceiving.

Payton has a long-standing track record of prioritizing interior line strength, dating back to his days in New Orleans. Whether it’s protecting the quarterback or anchoring the run game, he’s consistently invested in centers and guards early in the draft and free agency. That trend might continue in Denver, even if it doesn’t top the list of perceived needs.

One reason? Rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

With Nix likely stepping into a starting role early, interior protection becomes critical. Creating a clean pocket, especially up the middle, is essential for a young QB’s confidence and rhythm. Payton knows that better than anyone — and could look to secure that foundation by adding another versatile guard or center during the 2025 NFL Draft.

Another factor is depth. Injuries happen. And if the Broncos lose even one starter inside, the ripple effect could derail an entire offensive drive plan. Building depth now, while Nix is still developing and the offense is finding its identity, could be a strategic move — not a luxury.

While Denver may not be in crisis mode at guard or center, Sean Payton’s blueprint for building winning football starts up front. And if history repeats itself, don’t be surprised if the Broncos invest in a Day 2 or Day 3 interior lineman who ends up playing a big role.

Because with Sean Payton, the trenches are never an afterthought.
