With the annual NHL Entry Draft just around the corner and free agent frenzy not far beyond, the rumor machine is going absolutely nuts.

As a public service to my readers, The Maven is here to set the crazy rumor thing straight. Here are some simple rules:

1. Don't believe 96 percent of the rumors tossed out there.

2.  Beware of fake – but looking accurate – reports. The one that nearly fooled me the other day had Connor McDavid requesting a trade from Edmonton. Even his (the phony one) message had an offhand look of authenticity.

3. Only believe the most reliable "Insiders." Most every Elliotte Friedman "I hear that"  can be trusted. Ditto Darren Dreger and Kevin Weekes who has come up strong in the past year.

4. For the best, pure insights, The Maven goes to Neil Smith and Vic Morren's "NHL Wraparound.

5. Two more bits of advice: a. Beware, brother, beware! b. Beware, sister, beware!
