Howie Roseman and Co. make decision on Jahan Dotson's future with Eagles

Howie Roseman and company have made their decision on wide receiver Jahan Dotson's future with the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Eagles have declined to pick up Dotson's fifth-year option.

"#Eagles are declining the 5th-year option on WR Jahan Dotson, per source. This puts the former No. 16 pick in a contract year for this upcoming season," Schultz wrote Wednesday on X/Twitter.

It would have cost Philly $16.82 million to exercise Dotson’s 2026 option, and it did not make sense given his lack of production.

The Eagles originally acquired Dotson from the Washington Commanders in a trade finalized on August 22, 2024. Philadelphia received Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick, while sending a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-round picks to Washington.

Dotson, 24, was selected 16th overall by the Commanders out of Penn State in the 2022 NFL Draft. As a former first-round pick who hadn’t made a significant impact in Washington’s offense, they were okay with letting him go.

In two seasons with the Commanders, Dotson reeled in 84 passes for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His numbers were projected to skyrocket in Philly, but that didn't happen amid a run-heavy offense starring Saquon Barkley.

Dotson finished the 2024 regular season logging just 19 passes for 216 yards and zero touchdowns. He did, however, add three catches for 53 yards and a score during the Eagles' playoff run.

Since the Eagles won't be picking up Dotson's fifth-year option, he will become a free agent next March.

The Eagles don’t have a definitive No. 3 wide receiver heading into 2025, giving Dotson another opportunity to bounce back. However, earning that role won’t come easily since he will be competing with second-year wideout Ainias Smith and the shifty Britain Covey. Plus, with the NFL Draft coming up this weekend, there’s always the chance Philadelphia adds another name to the mix.
