Hockey in August draws nice crowd.

It has been quiet on the site and my apologies for that, but the action will pick up soon.

Canes Country has a couple of photographers that do some work for the blog. Last year we had James Jackson and Danielle Meyer provide some unique shots. This coming season, James will return and will be joined by Ashley White.

Ashley attended the recent Hurricanes Alumni versus the UNC Hockey Team contest at the Invisalign Arena. She took a few shots and wrote up a brief description of the game for us.

Thank you Ashley, we look forward to working with you in the future!

CHAPEL HILL N.C.- On August 16, the University of North Carolina Hockey Team faced off against the Carolina Hurricanes Alumni Association in an exhibition match at the Invisalign arena in Morrisville N.C.

The teams faced off in front of an electric sold out crowd, with Hurricanes Alumni players including Cam Ward, Aaron Ward, Shane Willis and Erik Cole.

At 7:00 p.m. the puck was dropped, and the action began. The first goal of the game came from Hurricanes Alumni player Bates Battaglia, and at the end of the first period, the Hurricanes Alumni were up 1-0.

The second period brought the Tar Heels first goal of the season by defensemen Spencer Haskell, as well as goals from Hurricanes Alumni Players, Shane Willis, Erik Cole and former UNC head coach Adam Dauda leaving the Tar Heels in a 5-1 deficit at the end of the second.

UNC Hockey’s president, Ben Edwards, scored the Tar Heels second goal during the third period, bringing excitement to the Tar Heels bench. However, the Hurricanes Alumni ended up besting the Tar Heels with a final score of 7-2.

While the Hurricanes Alumni won the exhibition, the game was about more than winning or losing, it was about growing the game of hockey in North Carolina. “The young alumni have a huge passion to continue to serve the community,” said Willis. “This is just the tip of the iceberg. The alumni want to be involved and continue to push to not only grow the sport, but help these young players continue to grow and make their dreams happen.”

After an exciting start to the season, the Tar Heels will face off against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on August 31 in their home opener at the Orange County Sportsplex.
