"I'm in Mourning": Angela Bassett Didn’t Make the Choice to Kill Off Peter Krause in '9-1-1'
In an emotional reveal that’s shaking the 9-1-1 fandom, Angela Bassett has opened up about the heartbreaking fate of her on-screen husband Bobby Nash, played by Peter Krause — and she’s making one thing clear: “I didn’t make that choice.”
The Season 8 finale left fans devastated after Bobby sacrificed himself in a gut-wrenching act of heroism, passing the antidote to Chimney in a fiery moment that ended his storyline. The death sent shockwaves through the show's core characters and its passionate audience. Now, Bassett — who plays Athena Grant-Nash — is breaking her silence.
“I’m in mourning,” she confessed in a recent interview. “That character, that relationship, was such a pillar for Athena — and for me as an actress. But I didn’t write it. That wasn’t my decision.”
Bassett went on to share how emotionally draining it was to film those final scenes with Krause, calling them “some of the hardest moments” she’s had on set. Fans have long admired the grounded, emotional strength Bassett brings to 9-1-1, but this loss hits especially close to home.
“What Athena and Bobby had was rare. There was love, respect, and healing between them,” she said. “We built that relationship over seasons, and to say goodbye like that... it broke my heart.”
Though the storyline was crafted by the writers, Bassett admitted she still feels the weight of the decision — and so do viewers. Social media has been flooded with tributes to the character and outcry over his exit.
As the show moves forward into a new chapter, fans are left wondering how Athena will carry on — and whether 9-1-1 can ever truly feel the same without Bobby Nash.
