“I Thought I Was On the Chopping Block”: Ryan Guzman Reveals His Reaction To That Unbelievable ‘9-1-1’ Death

A few weeks ago, after 9-1-1 did the unthinkable and killed-off the beloved captain of the 118, Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash, a handful of actors — including Angela Bassett — revealed that they had worried they’d be the ones to go. While none of the talented cast saw Krause’s exit coming, another has recently stepped forward to recount receiving the heartbreaking news that a family member would be exiting the series for good. While chatting with Us Weekly, Ryan Guzman, who plays firefighter Eddie Diaz, revealed that for a moment he thought that he was “on the chopping block” when the number of showrunner Tim Minear appeared on his phone. “I got the call from Tim [when] I hadn’t really worked in a month or so,” Guzman said, “I hadn’t been in two episodes. So I thought the call was for me!”

Bobby’s selfless sacrifice marked the first time in the show’s lengthy history that a main character had been killed-off. In a procedural like 9-1-1, big risks have to be taken, but now fans are wondering if the rest of their favorites are totally safe. It’s something that Guzman says is on his mind as well, adding, “You’re always kind of concerned. And now that you know this has happened, you just gotta be on your toes.” As for how he initially reacted to the news that Krause would be the one to go and how he’s continuing to process the loss, Guzman revealed,

“I was in shock. I was in complete shock. I mean, you think of the core group and you never think they’re gonna leave. Or, if one leaves, we all leave, right? But it was just a shock and kind of a weird thing to know that someone is going to be off the show, but then still work with them. Every single time I saw him, I would give him hugs and be like, 'Oh man, we will still hang out! We’re still gonna be friends.'”

What To Expect From ‘9-1-1’s Season 8 Finale

Tomorrow, 9-1-1 celebrates the arrival of its final episode of the season and will see the 118 continue their quest to save as many lives as possible. In the installment, titled “Seismic Shifts,” the team will respond to a mass casualty event after a high-rise apartment building crumbles to the ground. Although this won’t be the episode when we learn who will take over as captain, it will likely set up the storyline for the ninth season when we expect one of Bobby’s comrades to take over the position.
