Ice Cube gives Shedeur Sanders advice after speeding incident, points to Henry Ruggs

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was stopped by police recently for speeding at 101 miles per hour. Luckily, no one was injured in the process and the entire incident can serve as a learning opportunity for the talented rookie.

That’s the hope for one icon keeping his eye on Sanders’ career from afar: Ice Cube. The legendary rapper and media mogul chimed in during a sitdown segment with former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III on Outta Pocket.

Ice Cube noted he was impressed with how Sanders handled the stop. Body cam footage showed a cooperative Shedeur Sanders.

“He has great pedigree. He’s the son of an NFL Hall of Famer,” Ice Cube said. “So he’s a great example of a kid taking the opportunity that’s in front of him and running with it.

“But don’t go 100 miles an hour. That would be my advice. The Raiders had a player, his last name is Ruggs, and he was going over 100 miles an hour. He killed a lady and it ended his football career. So nothing good happens at 100 miles an hour. Wanna tell him to tone it down. Go 80, man. Go 85. But don’t go 100. Slow it down a little bit, youngster.”

Henry Ruggs, the former Alabama receiver turned pro when was jailed after that fatal crash, would likely give the same advice to Shedeur Sanders. Ruggs recently spoke at an event Hope for Prisoners put on.

Henry Ruggs regrets his mistake

In 2021, NFL receiver Henry Ruggs saw his life turned upside down following a fatal car crash. Ruggs was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison as a result, on a charge of driving under the influence that resulted in death.

In mid-June, Ruggs was granted a special release to speak to a group at a Hope for Prisoners event. Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz shared a video snippet of his speech, which focused on how sorry he was.

Asked what he would tell the group, Henry Ruggs knew where to take it. He began:

“One, that I wish I could turn back the hands of time,” Ruggs said. “I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something. I sincerely apologize for the, not only being a part of that situation, but the fact that — not to take a shot at you — but the fact that my face is always in the news. My face is always in the news so I have to be constantly reminded of the situation, be reminded of me and see those memories have to continue to rise because of all the fame and notoriety that I have, which I never asked for, I never liked.

“I would just tell them that, like I said, I deeply apologize for just being a part of that. I wish that they could meet the real Henry Ruggs and not one who was just running away from everything.”
