Igor Shesterkin brushed off questions about his contract as he made clear that it is his agent's problem.

Igor Shesterkin addressed the media for the first time on Friday and one of the first questions he was asked was about his contract situation.

It’s no secret that Shesterkin’s contract is up at the end of the season as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent.

The 28-year-old goalie brushed off questions regarding his thought process on his current contract status and made clear his focus is strictly on hockey.

“I have one more year,” Shesterkin said. “I don’t care about it… It’s work for my agent. I just want to be focused on my game and on practice everyday.”

It’s unclear if Shesterkin's camp have started to negotiate a new contract with the Rangers organization.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury has been on the record stating that he wants to ensure Shesterkin is in New York long term.

On a similar note, Shesterkin emphasized his desire to stay with the Rangers and his love for the team as a whole while also not making any sort of promises.

“I love the organization,” Shesterkin said. “I love the team. I love the fans. So of course, it would be great to stay here, but you never know what can happen.”

Whatever the outcome is with how Drury handles Shesterkin’s contract, it will have a monumental impact on the franchise.

Either the Rangers pay Shesterkin top-dollar, which will create a domino effect amongst the rest of the team in terms of retaining certain players, or the team loses arguably their most valuable piece and have to live life without the best goalie in the NHL.

It seems based on Shesterkin’s words that there may not be substantial progress on an extension until after the season, but since both Drury and Shesterkin have not commented on the specifics of the negotiations, nothing is crystal clear as of now.
