A hot topic for the New York Rangers this offseason is a brand-new contract extension for goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

The 28-year-old goaltender is set to become a free agent following the 2024-25 season and is in need of an extension.

When asked about if he thinks about a contract and his future with the Rangers, Shesterkin had a simple and lighthearted answer.

“I’m sorry, I don’t speak English.”

Obviously, Shesterkin was joking and certainly has high interest in staying with the Rangers long into the future, but it would be foolish of him to talk about the specifics of a contract extension at this point in time.

According to the New York Posts’ Mollie Walker, there’s reason to believe that Shesterkin’s camp is aiming for as high as $12 million a year, which would make him the highest paid goalie in the NHL.

The superstar goaltender won the Vezina Trophy in 2022 and is widely considered as one of the best to play his position in today’s game.

Shesterkin thanked Ranger fans days after their disappointing loss in the Eastern Conference Final and shared his excitement to return next season.

“I just want to say thank you so much,” Shesterkin said. “It was really amazing to play at MSG and the road trips. Best fans in the league. I love them so much. Can't wait to get back next season.”

There are some downsides to paying a goalie upwards of $10 million, but Shesterkin is a player that New York simply can’t afford to lose.

He has not only helped carry the Rangers on his back over the past three seasons, but he is now an icon to all the fans in New York who would most likely be in outrange if Chris Drury decided not to pay Shesterkin what he is reportedly requesting.

The Rangers will be allowed to talk with Shesterkin starting on July 1 and all eyes will be on both parties to see if they can strike a deal.
