Speaking with The Direct, Gimple, who acts as The Walking Dead's chief creative officer, revealed he wants to revive the 2022 anthology spinoff, Tales of the Walking Dead. The creative explained how there are no "imminent plans" for the show to come back, but he believes it would prove popular. He also said that, because every episode focuses on a different group of survivors, it's easier for the show to potentially return. Check out what Gimple had to say below:
I’m desperate to do more of those. We don't have imminent plans to do it, but I'm constantly, constantly, constantly bringing it up. It's a more challenging show because of the variety, because you're starting at zero every episode. So that's one thing that's sort of slowing it down a little bit. But I always keep it in the mix as a possibility. We can only put out so many Walking Dead shows, Walking Dead hours a year. But to me, I think that's a layup. I think everybody wants to see more stories of it and I think we totally just scratched the surface. And on top of that, I really want to see more of the characters from the past and I know the audience does too. Or things that were referred to in the past that we never saw. So, I'm determined to have it come back and it's a very easy show to come back. There's no... you know, we didn't end on a cliffhanger. So I think it's a possibility.
What Gimple's Statement Means For Tales Of The Walking Dead
A Continuation Was Originally Announced In 2023
Tales of the Walking Dead season 1 was released in 2022, featuring six stories of various survivors in different places and time periods of the zombie apocalypse. This included an episode about Alpha (Samantha Morton) and what led to her becoming the leader of the Whisperers. The show received generally positive reviews from critics. In April 2023, a follow-up series titled More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe was announced, expected to consist of another six episodes focused on individual survivor stories.
However, Gimple's latest update makes it seem like the show isn't currently a priority for the franchise. As of writing, Dead City season 2 is set to begin on May 4, 2025, while Daryl Dixon season 3 will arrive later in the year. These spinoffs focusing on legacy characters from the original appear to be the current trajectory of the zombie universe. While a follow-up is on the table, given the interest in making more and an announced title, the update makes it seem like other stories will be taking precedent, even if there was audience interest in its return.
Our Take On Tales Of The Walking Dead Possibly Coming Back
It Probably Won't Be For Quite Some Time
Based on Gimple's excitement about the idea, it sounds like Tales of the Walking Dead has a good chance of returning at some point in the franchise's future. But, with the series already airing two shows this year, it seems like the earliest the anthology series could return in 2026. For now, the future of the spinoff is up in the air as others are ongoing, but its compelling ideas and the stories it could tell mean it could see a strong return in the future.
