I'm not surprised that some characters weren't at the wedding of Lieutenant Commanders Worf (Michael Dorn) and Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 6, episode 7, "You Are Cordially Invited..." centers exclusively on Worf and Dax's wedding. The ceremony is planned quickly because Worf's son, Alexander (Marc Worden), will soon be leaving the station on the IKS Ya'Vang to fight in DS9's Dominion War. Worf has only recently made amends with his son, and he wants Alexander to be his Tawi'Yan, or best man.
Worf's insistence on having a traditional Klingon wedding is no surprise, given what we learn about Lieutenant Worf's history in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 2, "Family". Worf was raised on Earth by human parents, Sergey (Theodore Bikel) and Helena Rozhenko (Georgia Brown), after being orphaned in the Khitomer Massacre. Worf is ashamed of his recent discommendation from the Klingon Empire, and believes his parents won't understand. Even though the Rozhenkos already know they don't quite get Klingon culture, they always encouraged Worf to explore his heritage, because they genuinely care about Worf—dishonor and all.
Worf Didn’t Invite His Human Parents To His Star Trek: DS9 Wedding To Dax
There Were Many Good Reasons To Keep The Rozhenkos At Home
Although Worf and the Rozhenkos came to an understanding, Worf didn't invite his human parents to his and Dax's wedding in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Deep Space Nine was a major target in the ongoing Dominion War, so it wouldn't have been safe for the Rozhenkos to travel there, especially as civilians. There also wasn't enough time to get Sergey and Helena to the station before the wedding, because it takes two weeks to get from Earth to DS9. In other words, the Rozhenkos didn't attend for the same reasons the USS Enterprise-E crew weren't at Worf's wedding.
Worf's brother Kurn (Tony Todd) was also notably absent, since Kurn's memories had been erased in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4, episode 15, "Sons of Mogh".
But Worf still had family members present on his wedding day. Besides Alexander being Worf's sword-bearer, General Martok (J.G. Hertzler) and his wife Sirella (Shannon Cochran) came to Worf and Dax's wedding, because Worf joined the House of Martok in DS9 season 5. Jadzia Dax attempted to appeal to Sirella so she could join the House of Martok as Worf's bride, and that was with Worf's support. Although Worf didn't know that Sirella would judge Jadzia so harshly as a Trill, it worked in Worf's favor that the Rozhenkos didn't come to the wedding. Sirella would've hated them.
Jadzia Dax Didn’t Invite Her Family To Her Wedding On DS9
Jadzia May Not Be That Close To Her Trill Family Members Anymore
Jadzia previously mentioned having a father, mother, and sister, but their attendance at the wedding is never discussed. We never even learn the names of Jadzia's family members—or what Jadzia's family name was before she was joined. Most of what we know about Trill families comes from Jadzia's successor, Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer). In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 7, episode 11, "Prodigal Daughter". Ezri is a completely different person when she's awkwardly reintroduced to her mother and brothers, and their collective confusion explains why most joined Trill drift away from their families of origin. If Jadzia's family members were used to her being studious and reserved, they might be stunned to see Jadzia Dax's life as it is later in DS9. Jadzia's family might even have strong opinions about her marrying Worf in a Klingon ceremony without any traces of Trill culture at all. But leaving family members off the guest list isn't actually that unusual for a Star Trek wedding, because it can be difficult to include family who may be a whole quadrant away. Thankfully, Worf and Dax still had their Star Trek: Deep Space Nine family to celebrate with them.
