Indianapolis Colts have front-runner in cornerback competition

There are plenty of competitions taking place during the offseason workout program for the Indianapolis Colts, including the cornerback position.

It's widely expected that 2023 second-round pick JuJu Brents is a shoo-in for one of the starting roles on the boundary while veteran Kenny Moore II will man the nickel spot.

But there's a vital competition taking place for the other starting role on the boundary. With OTAs coming to a close, it seems a front-runner is becoming clear.

According to multiple reports from the OTA practices that were open to the media, second-year defender Jaylon Jones has the early lead for the third cornerback role.

The former seventh-round pick saw a lot of playing time during his rookie season mostly due to injuries, but he showed some impressive flashes of being worthy of a starting role.

His main competition is former undrafted free agent Dallis Flowers, who held the starting role in 2023 before an Achilles tear ended his season after just four games.

Flowers, too, showed some promise during his small stint as the starter before injury, allowing a 98.1 passer rating in coverage, per Pro Football Focus.

The other cornerback in the room vying for the starting role is Darrell Baker Jr., but he's likely a long shot to earn the role considering the inconsistencies he put on film in 2023.

The Colts didn't invest in a veteran cornerback this offseason because they had faith in their current room. It appears Jones has the early lead to take on a vital role in 2024.
