Insider Reveals Jets Jermaine Johnson Fill-in Plan

Jermaine Johnson is likely to be placed on the physically unable to perform list by the New York Jets to start training camp.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic revealed that “[Micheal] Clemons is the early favorite to fill in for Jermaine Johnson until Johnson returns from his Achilles injury. [Aaron] Glenn said on Tuesday that Johnson could start training camp on the PUP list but should be ready to return for Week 1.”

Clemons Is Unlikely Going Anywhere This Offseason

Despite outside noise from Jets fans and some media analysts, the team is unlikely to part ways with Clemons.

Not only now, but at any point this offseason leading into 53-man roster cutdowns. Clemons is the most experienced defensive end on this roster, not named Jermaine Johnson or Will McDonald.

The team didn’t do enough this offseason to make you feel good about the depth at defensive end. Johnson is coming off a torn Achilles from the 2024 season. McDonald is coming off a 10.5 sack career year, but he is only one guy.

Clemons, 27, has appeared in 49 games and has made 18 starts in his NFL career. The former Texas A&M product entered the league as the No. 117 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

Clemons has racked up 7.5 sacks, 97 total tackles, 15 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, and 10 tackles for loss.

Love him or hate him, Clemons is the third-best defensive end on this roster until proven otherwise.

There Has to Be a Cleaning up for Clemons to Realize Full Potential

Jets show confidence in up-and-coming stars with new look defensive line

Clemons has gotten himself into some problems.

On the sidelines of a Jets versus Cleveland Browns game, Clemons was caught on camera flipping the bird at fans.

Clemons got into a post-game interaction with Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins that nearly resulted in a brawl.

During a Miami Dolphins game, Clemons made contact with an official, which resulted in him getting tossed from the game.

In addition to all of those instances, Clemons has also committed numerous stupid penalties that have hurt his team.

“This may be serious cope Joe but gotta believe AG/Wilks will not accept any [expletive] from Clemons and bench him when necessary. Bob Saleh had substitute teacher vibes and never wanted to discipline,” a fan responded.

The good news is that a clean slate is in full effect. Whatever was going on with the old regime doesn’t matter anymore. Now, a new regime is in, which is a clean slate for everyone involved.

However, Clemons has to get on the straight and narrow as soon as possible. While he is one of the more experienced defensive linemen on the roster, this new regime comes off as a no-nonsense group. If that is true, it won’t vibe with the old Clemons we have seen before who has made silly mistakes that have hurt his team.
