A report shared ahead of the first full weekend of May mentioned that the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy were closer to coming to terms on a contract extension than some outsiders thought as recently as during the 2025 NFL Draft.
During a Monday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk touched upon what the 49ers locking tight end George Kittle down via a four-year, $76.4M extension with $40M guaranteed means regarding Purdy's future.
"When you scratch it and look at it, it's probably going to be — and this is just my interpretation based on Kittle's contract — it's going to be a two-year commitment for a lot of money," Florio said about Purdy's extension, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "Year three, maybe partially guaranteed, maybe a way to unlock more guarantees for year three. But...no team makes a commitment of more than three years fully guaranteed to a quarterback on a contract other than the rookie deal."
Florio offered his update after Mike Jones of The Athletic wrote on Monday that "Purdy is expected to wind up with a contract that will pay him around $50M per season and places him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league." Florio told Eisen that he thinks Purdy could receive roughly $55.1M per year.
According to Spotrac, such a deal would put Purdy behind only Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys as it pertains to average annual value.
Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, 49ers general manager John Lynch said during the latest edition of the "Chris Simms Unbuttoned" podcast that the club and Purdy's camp have had "really good" and "positive" discussions this offseason. While the 25-year-old began Tuesday still in the final year of his inexpensive rookie deal, Lynch added that he hopes Purdy will ink an extension "sooner rather than later."
Purdy has participated in the voluntary portion of the club's offseason program this spring, but Florio suggested on Monday that the final pick of the 2022 draft should not take "part in a single snap of" organized team activities that are set to begin on May 27 if he doesn't have an extension by then. It sounds like Lynch would prefer to have the Purdy situation wrapped up before the Memorial Day holiday weekend arrives.
