The Falcons had a very quiet offseason when it came to acquisitions. Of course, there’s no shortage of noise when it comes to Kirk Cousins, but actual moves, Atlanta made very little.
The team’s most notable free agent addition is Leonard Floyd, who inked a one-year deal worth $10 million. The largest contract handed out was a $14 million deal over two years, going to Divine Deablo.
Mike Hughes was brought back, Jordan Fuller joined him in the secondary, and Morgan Fox bolstered the defensive front in the wake of Grady Jarrett leaving Atlanta. All in all, it didn’t move Falcons fans.
Some are still hoping for a blockbuster move to come down the pike in the form of a Trey Hendrickson trade. Well, Josh Kendall of The Athletic described that possibility as a pipe dream.
“Don’t expect the Cincinnati Bengals to trade pass rusher Trey Hendrickson to the Falcons. He’s probably not going to get traded anywhere, in fact. The four-time Pro Bowler who has had 17 1/2 sacks in each of the last two seasons has requested a trade, but the Bengals don’t appear eager to comply. Hendrickson is under contract through the upcoming season and will count $18.6 million against the salary cap this season.”
Kendall noted that the Bengals’ current asking price for the star pass rusher includes a first-round pick. For the Falcons, it would require a first-rounder (and probably more), then extending Trey Hendrickson on a deal worth more than $30 million per year. The Atlanta beat writer added that if Cincinnati’s asking price comes down, things could change, but that looks unlikely.
Don’t expect one of the few notable free agents to sign with the Falcons either. The slow free agency was “no surprise.”
“It’s always hard to have back-to-back big years in free agency,” Raheem Morris said. “You have to have a realistic approach to what you want to do. When you have the money allocated where we have it, there are going to be some harder things you have to do.”
While the Falcons never had the most cap space this offseason, they had multiple avenues to create some. Most notably, the team can still save quite a bit of money if they can find someone to trade for Kirk Cousins. However, that doesn’t look incredibly likely as of now.
All of this is to say, the Falcons roster is 90% solidified, perhaps even more so. They’ll welcome five rookies unless a trade happens, and maybe Kirk Cousins isn’t on the roster. But more than that, fans shouldn’t expect anything.
