It’s a Zero Percent Chance the Colts Land Rare Two-Way Player

Don’t expect Travis Hunter, who was listed as the perfect fit for the Colts, to land in Indianapolis this offseason.

Former Colorado star Travis Hunter will be joining the NFL in April. Will the Indianapolis Colts be his new team? Recently, Nic Bodiford of Pro Football Focus listed Hunter as a perfect fit for the Colts.

Unless there’s a major surprise, Travis Hunter will be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. It wouldn’t shock many people if he turns out to be a superstar. With that said, he’d pretty much be a perfect fit for any team.

Hunter would undoubtedly be a great pickup for the Colts. But don’t look for the team to acquire him this offseason.

It’s a Zero Percent Chance the Colts Land Travis Hunter This Offseason

Looking Back at His Career

Travis Hunter starred at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia. He played both cornerback and wide receiver. During his senior year, he caught 76 catches for 1,128 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense, and added 23 tackles, four interceptions and a forced fumble as a defender. Hunter led Collins Hills to a 15-0 record a state title.

Hunter originally committed to play college football at Florida State. Yet, he ultimately chose Jackson State, which was coached by Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Hunter became the first five-star recruit to ever sign with an HBCU.

After one season at Jackson State, Hunter followed Sanders to the University of Colorado. In 2024, Hunter caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns as a wide receiver. He recorded 36 combined tackles, four interceptions, and 11 pass breakups as a cornerback. As a result, Hunter became just the second defender in history (Charles Woodson in 1997) to win the Heisman Trophy. He was also the first player in history to win both the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player and the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the best wide receiver.

Why the Colts Won’t Acquire Him

Colts general manager Chris Ballard loves to make draft trades. He has made a bunch of them since joining the team in 2017. He has traded back several times and is known for moving up in 2020 to get Jonathan Taylor.

However, Ballard has never traded up in the first round. That’s what he’d have to do to land Travis Hunter. Hunter is expected to be a top-five pick in this year’s draft. The Colts currently own the 14th overall pick. That means they’d have to give up quite of bit of picks to move up that far.

Hunter possesses a ton of potential. He’s a rare two-way player who can become a star on both sides of the football field. He might be an upgrade over any of Indy’s receivers. Hunter could also help bolster the team’s secondary. However, Ballard isn’t going to give up a smorgasbord of draft picks to get a wide receiver/cornerback. That’s just not how he operates. Plus, the team is already set at wide receiver with guys like Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs. Plus, they’re set at cornerback with the recent signing of Charvaius Ward. So sorry Colts fans who want their team to acquire Travis Hunter. He’s not going to Indianapolis, at least not this year anyway.
