It’s way too Early for Jets to Worry About Struggling Fields

If there’s one thing we’ve noticed about Jets training camp in the early going it’s the lack of consistent execution on the offensive side of the ball.  Quarterback Justin Fields has made his share of impressive throws, but they’ve been few and far between.

As noted by Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, not all of Fields’ struggles were down to him in the team’s third padded practice of the day.  There were tight windows to throw though and some drops on catchable passes by Jets receivers.

In fact, Fields closed out each of the past two practices with strong finishes, hitting Mason Taylor on touchdowns both times, after having less than stellar results up to that point.

Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News told his followers on that Fields could have had a couple of interceptions if not dropped by the defense, but also mentioned the touchdown strike to Taylor to close out the day.

There’s some good and some bad to take away from what the Jets have seen from Field in pads.  The bad being the lack of accuracy.  The good, of course, is Fields showing what he has often show which is the ability to put the bad behind him and finish strong.

Add in the fact that this is Fields on a new team, a new offense and new receivers, and one can understand why there have been some hiccups early on.

That’s not to say we know for certain that Fields will shake off the rust and reach his full potential as a passer because nobody knows if or when that will ever happen.  What it does say is that fans shouldn’t make too much of a few practices in pads as Fields finds his way.
