Moments into the live semi-final of Britain's Got Talent, judge Amanda Holden faced a chorus of boos from the audience over her candid remarks. Before sharing her thoughts on the first act, Amanda cautioned: "I'm not going to be very popular".
First to take the stage were dance duo Harry and Lewis, hailing from the Wirral and Manchester, who have been dance partners since childhood.
Despite receiving glowing praise from fellow judges Bruno Tonioli and Alesha Dixon, Amanda's comments quickly dampened the mood.
Amanda didn't hold back, prefacing her critique with "I'm not going to be very popular" and "thank God for the production because I was quite disappointed with that."
"I can see that you have worked hard and that the choreography you had worked hard on," she stated as the audience booed.
"But I don't think it was enough, I just don't feel like that was a step up from your first audition, so I am really sorry."
The live audience responded with a cacophony of boos, drowning out her words.
Simon Cowell stepped in to defend the duo In contrast, Simon Cowell felt their performance surpassed their initial audition, though he did express doubts about Harry and Lewis's desire to win, reports Wales Online.
"Personally, I did feel like this was better than your first audition," Simon told them. "You make what looks hard, easy.
"I think you are skewered towards a younger audience, I mean it, but do you really want to win this?"
Harry and Lewis took Amanda's feedback on board As the duo said, 100 percent, Simon pointed out: "You don't say much, and I think sometimes you need to tell the audience how much it means to you."
Harry went on to respond: "We have been dancing all of our lives as a career, and like everyone else with their jobs, we went through a whole pandemic with it, managed to keep going, dancing, teaching, competing, kept the passion for it."
He added: "In answer to your question, Simon, of course we want to win it."
