Campbell has yet to play in a game against his former club.
The Toronto Maple Leafs aren't the only team dealing with an injury to the goaltending position.
The Detroit Red Wings called up former Leafs netminder Jack Campbell from the Grand Rapids of the AHL to back up Ville Husso on Saturday.
Cam Talbot was injured in practice on Friday and Alex Lyon is recovering from a lower-body injury. Talbot was presented with a silver stick in a pre-game ceremony for crossing the 500 career-game milestone.
Campbell has yet to play in a game against his former club since he departed for the Edmonton Oilers at the end of the 2021-22 season.
The 32-year-old goaltender signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Red Wings in July 2024, aiming to revitalize his NHL career after being bought out by the Edmonton Oilers. However, on October 4, 2024, just before the season opener, Campbell entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program until Nov. 17 when the player was placed on waivers.
Campbell played 77 games with the Maple Leafs from 2019-220, achieving a record of 51-14-9 with 2.50 goals-against average and a save percentage of .916. On April 7, 2021, Campbell set a Maple Leafs franchise record by securing his 10th consecutive win, surpassing the previous record held by Felix Potvin, Jacques Plante, and John Ross Roach. During that 2021 season, Campbell passed Frederik Andersen as Toronto's starting netminder.
Following his stint with the Maple Leafs, Campbell signed a five-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers. However, his performance declined, leading to a demotion to the AHL and eventual buyout of his contract.
Campbell is 0-2-0 with a .919 save percentage in two AHL games this season.
