MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Jamal Roberts is now in the Top 7 of American Idol, and Sunday, viewers will find out if he makes it to the Top 5.
Jamal has excelled in the competition so far, leaving judges astonished and social media raving as he performs genre after genre. The show is pushing him in versatility.
“In a way, (the songs) are assigned. They’re on a list, so you have to choose from a list. And if you’re like me, a church kid, you’re looking at that list like... ‘Okay what is this?’ So I’m going through the list just listening to see which one will fit me, which one I can make my own. Most of the songs I’ve sung so far, I didn’t know. I had to really just learn it, and that is stressful,“ said Roberts.
Despite the stress he may be feeling, he’s grateful for Meridian’s support.
“The Class of 2016 has been supporting me wholeheartedly. And just people, restaurants that I’ve seen, Don P’s, that just went over and beyond. And I’ve never met them, and they’ve never met me. You don’t have to meet somebody to show support and show love, and that’s what I love about people,” said Roberts.
Sunday will be Disney night.
Contestants are being mentored by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will also perform during Sunday’s episode.
