James Hagens, the rookie selected 7th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, has announced that he will return to Boston College for his second season instead of joining the NHL immediately. In an interview with Scott McLaughlin of WEEI 93.7, Hagens shared that he views development as a "marathon, not a sprint." This decision was made during the Bruins' 14th-anniversary celebration event, where Hagens joined his teammates Mason Lohrei and John Beecher.
Last season, Hagens impressed with 37 points in 37 games at Boston College, earning a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Known for his game awareness, smart movements, and ability to use skill and strength to create scoring opportunities, Hagens is regarded as one of the most promising talents in the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP). He set multiple international records, including being the top scorer in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge and the World U-18 Championship.
Hagens' decision to stay at Boston College is not only a strategic move for his personal career but also has the potential to significantly impact the NCAA scene, especially as Boston College is missing two key players, Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard, who signed NHL contracts. Hagens' return is expected to bring new energy to the team and create new opportunities for other young talents.
