James Reimer Becomes NHL’s Hottest Goalie, Leading Sabres Amid Unlikely Late-Season Surge

BUFFALO – James Reimer, the 37-year-old veteran, has defied expectations and emerged as the NHL’s hottest goalie, winning six straight starts while posting a 2.80 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. The Sabres could turn to Reimer again on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes at KeyBank Center, giving him a chance to extend his career-best six-game win streak.

Reimer’s Unexpected Rise to the Top

Reimer, who had spent much of the season as a backup, has stepped up at just the right time, replacing Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen as the Sabres’ go-to goalie. The team, despite being on the verge of missing the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season, has embraced Reimer’s recent performances as a potential springboard to end the season on a high note.

Before this current run, Reimer had just two wins all season. But since his standout 33-save performance in a 5-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets on March 23, he’s been a different player, showcasing his veteran leadership and determination.

A Season Full of Surprises

Reimer’s journey this season has been anything but typical. After signing a one-year, $1 million contract with the Sabres in July, he started the season as the third goalie before being waived in October and briefly claimed by the Anaheim Ducks. After his brief stint with the Ducks, Buffalo reclaimed Reimer in November, where he settled into his backup role—until the Sabres found themselves in need of a spark.

“I’m just trying to enjoy the moment,” Reimer said of his unexpected role. “I approach this game with a lot of gratitude.”

Ostlund Impresses in NHL Debut

Rookie Noah Ostlund, 21, has also made waves with the Sabres, impressing head coach Lindy Ruff in his first two NHL appearances. Centering the fourth line with Beck Malenstyn and Sam Lafferty, Ostlund displayed his passing skills and hockey IQ. Ruff was impressed with his all-around play, saying the trio created positive energy and momentum for the team.

Looking Ahead

With the Sabres’ playoff hopes slipping away, Reimer’s unexpected hot streak and Ostlund’s promising debut are a glimpse of hope as they look to close out the season strong.
