One of the biggest moves this offseason for the New York Jets was signing free-agent quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed.
Last year, with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fields appeared in 10 games with six starts, completing 106-of-161 passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and on interceptions, while also having 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Of course, it's believed that he will be the Jets' starter moving forward, but in a mock draft done by Chad Reuter of NFL.com, he predicts New York will select Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart with the No. 7 pick.
"I don't doubt the Jets believe in Justin Fields, but I also think that won't necessarily preclude them from drafting a QB," Reuter wrote. "Competition between Fields and Dart will help the team figure out if either player can become Gang Green's long-term answer."
Dart is coming off his own impressive season with the Rebels, appearing in 13 games while completing 276-of-398 passes for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 180.7 passing efficiency rating (led FBS).
However, for the Jets to draft him at No. 7 would be a surprise considering Pro Football Focus ranks him as the No. 6 quarterback and the No. 129 player available in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Even if this scenario did become a reality and Dart lost out on the starting spot, then he could be waiting in the wings until Fields' contract with the Jets is up after the 2026 season.
