When the New York Jets drafted tight end Mason Taylor, many knew the type of player Tanner Engstrand and the offense were getting.
A good pass-catcher, who could easily rocket to the top of the tight end depth chart and be Justin Fields' security blanket, but also one who can hold his own in the run game.
But that was in college, and as we know, sometimes things don't translate to professional football.
However, in Taylor's case, as training camp continues, head coach Aaron Glenn is loving what he's seeing from his rookie.
"There's nothing different than what we saw when it came to what we saw in college," Glenn said. "I told you guys from the beginning, the thing that impresses me about him is his ability to block. So, the receiving skills -- that doesn't surprise me. His blocking, I know he can block, but I didn't think he was going to be this good. So, I'm excited to see how he matures when it comes to camp and how we want to do things as far as that is concerned."
Set to be a big part of the offense, there is a clear role for Taylor if he proves he is good enough, and while it is only early in camp, it appears the rookie is already making good strides.
Not only in the passing game, which we all knew was going to be a formality, but also in the run game, which we think, will be how the Jets define themselves under Engstrand.
Training camp is a time for rookies to make their mark on the team and to put themselves in the best spot at making the final roster, and for Taylor, while most thought he would anyway, he's now making a certainty of it.
