Jets agree to terms with Steve Wilks to be defensive coordinator

The New York Jets have their defensive coordinator for Aaron Glenn.

The team has reportedly tabbed veteran, longtime NFL coach and coordinator Steve Wilks as the DC for Glenn’s coaching staff, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

Wilks, 55, had long been reported to be the favorite to land the defensive coordinator job on the Jets’ coaching staff led by Glenn. Some of those dated back to prior to Glenn ever being hired.

The attraction for Glenn and the team to get Wilks in New York likely relates to his experience as Glenn is a first-time bench boss. Wilks was most recently the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator in 2023 but also has head coaching experience.

Wilks led the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and was the interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

In addition to his experience, many point to the defensive coordinator position as an important one the Jets need to nail.

Not only is Glenn a rookie head coach, as a former defensive coordinator, he said at his introductory press conference he does not plan on calling plays for New York defense. That will fall on Wilks’ plate now.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the offseason.
