The New York Jets have signed cornerback and special teamer Kris Boyd, a player who caught national attention in 2025 because of the wrong reasons.
According to KRPC2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, the Jets and Boyd have agreed to a one-year deal. Full terms of the deal have not yet been announced.
Boyd was a seventh-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2019. He departed the Vikes in 2023 for the Arizona Cardinals but was released in October of that season. A few weeks after that he joined the Houston Texans and was there until this past season.
Boyd has spent the majority of his career as a core special teamer, only making six starts on defense in 81 career games. The 28-year-old played in 77 percent of the Texans' special teams snaps last season and had that same role during the postseason against the Kansas City Chiefs.
That outing saw him catch the wrong kind of attention.
As explained by our friends at Texans Wire:
Perhaps the most memorable moment of his Texans' career came following that fumble at Arrowhead Stadium. Boyd shoved Texans special teams coach Frank Ross on the sideline after committing a penalty on a kickoff during the opening drive.
A clip of the incident can be found below:
Despite the outburst, new Jets special teams coordinator hired by head coach Aaron Glenn, Chris Banjo, won't have to worry. At least, not according to Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans as he downplayed the situation.
Ryans said that he wasn't upset with Boyd shoving Ross and that social media took the play out of context. That didn't mean he was happy with how Boyd responded by taking his off and throwing his helmet during a live play... but Ryans quelled it.
"I think it was more so he was fired up - overly fired up - and thought he made a play to help us," Ryans said in January. "So that narrative that he's pushing a coach, that's incorrect."
Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 offseason.
