Flyers News

Very few fans were left satisfied when the Philadelphia Flyers drafted center Jett Luchanko 13th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft at the end of June, but after a nice scrimmage with the Guelph Storm and some insightful comments in an interview from Flyers general manager Danny Briere, the Luchanko hype train is starting to gain steam.

Briere recently compared his third first-round pick to Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki, who is 5-foot-11, played for Guelph, grew up in London, Ontario, and was drafted with the 13th pick in his draft year.

Suzuki led the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final in only his second year in the NHL and soon blossomed into a 20-goal scorer, a 30-goal scorer, and, in recent years, a 70-point scorer. Briere said in the interview that he and the Flyers would be happy if Luchanko was half as good as Suzuki is, but truthfully, Luchanko’s blistering speed gives him a chance to be even better.

Speaking of blistering speed, you might want to learn a little more about Latvian center Rodrigo Abols, who scored an impressive highlight-reel goal against France ahead of his first Flyers training camp. I think he has a sneaky good chance of making the NHL roster this year, but we’ll see in a few weeks.

NHL News

After landing a golden opportunity to make a name for himself and save his NHL career with the San Jose Sharks last season, 2018 former No. 6 overall pick Filip Zadina has opted to play overseas after signing a two-year contract with Swiss outfit HC Davos.

Zadina, 24, was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings ahead of the likes of NHL All-Star and Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes, rising defensemen Evan Bouchard and Noah Dobson, and steady Flyers forward Joel Farabee.

It’s safe to say that Zadina’s last chance at kickstarting his NHL career did not go according to plan.
