John Stamos gushed over his chance to star alongside “American Idol” alum Adam Lambert and “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo in “Jesus Christ Superstar” in a last-minute performance over the weekend.
“What an unforgettable night under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl, 24 hours to step into the jeweled madness of King Herod in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ — and performing it for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. No pressure, right?” the “Full House” actor shared on August 2.
Stamos continued, “Sharing the stage with the electrifying @cynthiaerivo and the unstoppable @adamlambert was a total masterclass. Their voices shook the heavens.
To the cast, crew, and every single soul in that massive crowd — thank you. You lifted us up.”
“This show is pure rock opera magic, and to do it in a venue like @thehollywoodbowl, for one of the greatest composers of our time, is something I’ll never forget. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take off my @howardstern wig and come down from the glitter high,” he wrote.
Stamos’ Instagram carousel included pictures of him wearing a curly wig and a shiny gold ensemble as King Herod in the rock opera.
His fellow stars congratulated him on his onstage performance, with Rita Wilson writing, “Absolutely brilliant, John!!!”
Kristin Chenoweth praised, “You were wonderful! Didn’t miss a beat!”
“Hey, I played [King Herod] in the fourth grade! congratulations!!!” Holly Robinson Peete shared.
Stamos Had Litte Time to Prepare For His Role
Stamos joined the cast of “Jesus Christ Superstar” as a last-minute replacement for Josh Gad, who had to step away due to COVID-19.
“Well… this weekend just got Biblical. I’m stepping in as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the @HollywoodBowl, starring the brilliant @cynthiaerivo . King @Joshgad unexpectedly got hit with COVID (feel better soon, brother!) and while I didn’t push him down the stairs, I am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lamé,” Stamos wrote in a July 31 Instagram post.
“This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because … I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off. Wish me luck. And let’s rock the Bowl,” he added.
“Thank you for wearing the crown. In my absence, my friend. You’re gonna kill it,” Gad replied.
Adam Lambert & Cynthia Erivo Crushed Their Performances
Erivo and Lambert performed for all three nights at the Hollywood Bowl star-studded event that began August 1 and ran until August 3.
In a clip shared by the “American Idol” star, he stood on stage alongside Erivo as Judas, while she played Jesus.
Erivo’s casting caused some controversy, which Lambert was quick to defend. “Cynthia’s brilliant. Her voice, presence, and simultaneous power and vulnerability absolutely blow my mind, and working with her has been a dream,” he told Billboard.
“I’m excited by the challenge of presenting the audience with a production led by a female, Black ‘Jesus’ and encourage the audience to expand their minds a bit. Originally utilizing rock and roll, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is supposed to provoke and challenge, that’s the point,” he said.
