Joshua Roy is Showing Some Improvement

Joshua Roy has some promise.

I always talk about the jumps from one league to another. Joshua Roy had 51 goals, 68 assists in the QMJHL in 2021-22. That was his zenith in amateur hockey. Then he went to Laval, and did fine, but there was one thing that shined more than the rest of his play.

In 2023-24, he got a good taste of the NHL playing in 23 games and scoring four goals and nine assists. There’s some promise there but sending him to Laval was the correct move. In Laval, Roy had 13 goals and 19 assists in 41 games.

Roy will score on the wing. At center, he’s not a true playmaker and he’s not great on face-offs. He’s at 25% on draws this season. His 5.1 shots per game is good. Roy is getting 3:16 of power play time, so he should get numbers but there are some other issues.

According to InStat, he has no defensive zone starts and 88% in the offensive zone and 12 % in the neutral zone. So, sending him down after four games this year was smart but at some point, he is going to be asked to play better defensively to get a call up on a more permanent basis. 19 points in 23 games is good, and the fact that he won’t turn 22 until August is good but the next step is the all-around play. That must get better.

I like Roy’s shot off the rush and he has good hands around the net. There may be something here. As a fifth round pick in 2021, if he’s an NHL fill-in, that’s good. If he becomes more than that, then you’re smiling.
