Nobody should be surprised by this development. Joshua Roy last played on March 27th against the Flyers. I barely noticed him in that game and he barely played. He logged just 8:06 in ice time.

The Canadiens have other players to use and they must not see him in their playoff plans, so this is the best thing for the 21-year-old. If he were better in his own end, maybe they would have considered keeping him up because of the perceived offense. But two goals in 12 games just isn’t enough to keep you in the NHL this time of the year.

He can go on a run in Laval where he’s had more success. Roy scored 20 goals with 15 assists in 46 games. There’s no shame in this for the player. This doesn’t diminish him as a player. This is a sign that the Montreal Canadiens are starting to build more depth and now and in the future it’s going to start getting harder to crack the roster. That’s the progression you look for as a team.

Postseason experience is great for players. Roy only has one game played with Laval and that was back in 2021-22. This is another reason why having him in Laval is going to be good for him down the road. This run can really fuel him and maybe he has something to prove as far as trying to make the team out of training camp.
