One of the pleasant surprises of the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp was rookie first-round pick Jihaad Campbell being ready to practice with the team on day one. It appears the rookie is moving up quickly on the depth chart.
During day three of Eagles training camp, Campbell was seen taking first-team reps on defense with Zack Baun at inside linebacker. NBC Sports Philadelphia Eagles reporter Dave Zangaro cautioned fans that it might not mean that Campbell is the game one starter.
"Rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell got his first first-team reps of training camp on Saturday as the Eagles began to mix him in a bit. To be clear, Zack Baun and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. are still very clearly the top pairing right now (with Nakobe Dean on PUP) but Campbell began to get some first-team reps later in some practice periods on Saturday. It seems likely that those first-team reps are going to continue to increase."
It's a step in the right direction for Campbell after missing Eagles' offseason workouts
Just a month ago, the conversation was whether Campbell would even be ready for the regular season after getting surgery on his torn labrum during the offseason. How refreshing it is for Eagles fans to see their first-round pick getting reps with the first team.
With Dean and Campbell injured during the offseason, it was Baun and Trotter as the first-team inside linebacker. There is a high percentage change that Trotter still ends up as the starter for their Week 1 game against the the Dallas Cowboys if Dean still can't go.
Campbell is only three practices in with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme so he is playing catch up compared to the rest of his teammates. It's still encouraging to see Campbell on the field. Honestly, it's impressive.
The preseason will be interesting what Fangio does at inside linebacker as it will be most likely Campbell and Trotter getting first-team reps as Baun will be resting for a good portion of the three games.
All signs appear to be the Eagles are off to a great start with training camp now that their top pick from this year's NFL Draft is getting live reps with his teammates.
