Just Like the Game, The Last of Us 2's TV Adaptation Is Getting Review Bombed

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us is getting review bombed.

Currently, there’s a chasm between the show’s 95% Tomatometer rated by critics and the 42% Popcornmeter rated by viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. It doesn’t look massively dissimilar to the game’s Metacritic ratings: 93 from critics and 58 from fans.

The Last of Us 2 is a controversial story, of course, because it depicts the premature death of a beloved character. Not everyone vibed with that in the game – we still maintain it’s brilliantly handled, personally – and there are some frustrated with it in the show.

However, the complaints aimed at the series are a little more complicated than that. Some don’t like the structural changes that the writers have made, specifically with regards to Abby’s arc. Others simply feel that the story’s being rushed.

People are review-bombing 'The Last of Us' for homophobic reasons—again!

And then there’s criticism of actress Bella Ramsey’s Ellie: some feel she’s failed to really capture the character, especially the more mature heroine from the game. Others, we’re sad to say, just want to poke fun at her appearance. And, disappointingly, there are some individuals who still can’t stand seeing same-sex relationships on their television screen.

So, it’s all a bit of a mess, then, and it does make you wonder whether The Last of Us 2 will ever shed its divisive status. Probably not at this point.
