One day removed from Justin Fields being carted off the field with a toe injury , the New York Jets quarterback is back and running around at training camp on Friday.
The team announced that Fields sustained a dislocated toe and will be day-to-day. The veteran quarterback avoided a serious injury, which was feared since he was carted off the field.
The injury happened during the final rep of the first team period when Fields threw a pass to rookie tight end Mason Taylor. After attempting the pass, Fields favored his right field and limped to the sideline.
After practice, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn gave an update on Fields. “I don’t know the severity of the injury,” Glenn said. “I do know it’s a toe on his right side.”
The Jets have Tyrod Taylor as the backup quarterback, and Glenn is confident he can get the job done if Fields were to ever go down with a serious injury. “Tyrod’s been in this league 14 years. With the leadership he brings, we’re all good,” Glenn said. “I think the most important part is that if anything does happen to Justin, I don’t think there’s any drop off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play call.”
“They’re very similar when you talk about skillset, that was very enticing to us. And the things we heard about him, I played against him before, and you could just tell the players really gravitate to him when he says something. He’s been around this league a long time and he knows what it takes to win, and he’s a really good person.”
It however seems like Fields will certainly be good to go for the Jets’ week one matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 7.
Justin Fields signed two-year contract with Jets in March
Fields is entering his first season with the Jets after signing with the franchise back in March. That’s after one year spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, after three with the Chicago Bears as a former first-round pick by them back in 2021.
In his career in the NFL, Fields has completed 61.1% of his throws for 7,780 yards, at just 155.6 passing yards per game, with 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He has also rushed for 2,509 yards, at 50.2 yards a game, and 19 touchdowns as well, with some success as a dual-threat. Most of that came as a starter while in Chicago, but Fields did make six starts with 10 appearances total for Pittsburgh last season before the return of Russell Wilson from a calf injury he also suffered while in training camp.
