The Philadelphia Eagles left a huge void to fill in their secondary when they traded starting safety CJ Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans last month, but they could get their way with the perfect replacement if they want to.
Four-time All-Pro safety and current free agent Justin Simmons made a recent appearance on 'Up and Adams' with Kay Adams, where he named the Eagles as one of his preferred landing spots.
Simmons, 31, also took a moment to break down why signing with the Eagles makes too much sense, and it all starts with reuniting his former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio.
“It really does. As honest as I can be, a lot of it, too, going back to your question earlier about Atlanta, there was a lot of new, right? There was a new system, there’s a new way to do it,” Simmons said. Going to Philly with Vic, you know exactly what you’re getting out of me, and I know exactly what I’m getting out of them. Because I’ve been in the system. I still have a ways to go to mastering it but there are some things and nuances that I know that Vic likes, that I know that Christian Parker likes. I think I could really help in that area.
“Obviously, them moving on from C.J. (Gardner-Johnson) and what he’s poured into that city, there is big shoes to fill. But I love what they have going on with (Reed) Blankenship and the rest of the supporting cast there. So I don’t know. It’s interesting. I’m excited to see what happens.”
Simmons also played under Eagles' secondary coach Christian Parker in Denver.
While Simmons is no longer the All-Pro he once was when he was coached by Fangio and Parker, he knows how their system operates, and he is still an experienced veteran that they could use opposite Reed Blankenship.
Following eight years in Denver, Simmons joined the Atlanta Falcons last August and logged 62 total tackles (36 solo) and seven passes defended with two interceptions (his fewest since 2017) through 16 games.
Only time will tell what the Eagles' plans are, but if Simmons is still available after the 2025 NFL Draft wraps up at the end of the month, then expect them to make their offer.
